Underfloor Heating vs Radiators: Which Is Better?

Underfloor heating is increasingly popular in renovations. Here's an honest comparison of UFH vs traditional radiators across cost, comfort, and practicality.

Underfloor heating (UFH) is increasingly popular in kitchen and bathroom renovations. But is it genuinely better than radiators, or is it mostly aesthetics? Here's a practical comparison.

Types of underfloor heating

**Wet UFH (hydronic):** Warm water circulates through pipes embedded in or under the floor screed, connected to your boiler or heat pump. More efficient and better for whole-house use.

**Electric UFH (dry):** Electric mats or cables under floor tiles. Simpler to install but significantly more expensive to run. Best limited to small areas like bathrooms.

Comfort comparison

UFH heats from the floor upward, creating a gentle, even warmth throughout the room without cold spots or draughts. It's widely regarded as the most comfortable form of heating.

Radiators heat by convection — warm air rises from the radiator, cools, and falls. This creates slightly uneven temperatures (warmer near the radiator, cooler away from it) but heats rooms faster because of the higher output.

Response time

Wet UFH is slow to respond — it can take 30–60 minutes to heat a room from cold. This is managed with longer heating schedules or smart controls.

Radiators heat rooms in 15–20 minutes, making them more responsive and flexible.

Compatibility with heat pumps

Wet UFH is ideally suited to heat pumps, which operate efficiently at the low flow temperatures (35–45°C) that UFH requires. Radiators need higher temperatures (60–75°C) to be effective, which reduces heat pump efficiency.

Our verdict

**Wet UFH** is excellent for new builds, ground floor extensions, and major renovations where the floor is being lifted anyway. The comfort benefits are genuine.

**Radiators** remain the more practical choice for retrofitting into existing homes where floor lifting isn't viable, or where faster heat-up times are needed.

For many homes, a combination works best: UFH in the kitchen and bathroom (where tiled floors make installation straightforward), radiators elsewhere.
