You don't need to replace your boiler to make meaningful savings on your heating bills. Many of the most effective changes cost little or nothing to implement.
1. Get your boiler serviced
A serviced boiler burns fuel more efficiently than one with dirty burners or a scaled heat exchanger. The cost of an annual service is typically recovered within the year through lower fuel bills.
2. Bleed your radiators
Radiators with trapped air have to work harder to achieve the same heat output. Bleeding them (a five-minute job per radiator) ensures every radiator is running at full efficiency.
3. Install thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
TRVs allow you to set different temperatures in different rooms, cutting heat to unused rooms automatically. Replacing fixed valves with TRVs (a straightforward job for a plumber) is one of the highest-return efficiency upgrades available.
4. Lower your flow temperature
On many modern condensing boilers, lowering the flow temperature from 80°C to 60°C can improve efficiency by 10–15% without perceptibly affecting comfort. Combine with TRVs and good insulation for best results.
5. Upgrade your thermostat
A programmable or smart thermostat ensures your heating runs only when needed. Smart thermostats like Hive or Nest learn your schedule, can be controlled remotely, and can cut heating bills by 10–15% compared to a basic manual thermostat.
6. Insulate your loft
Up to 25% of a home's heat is lost through the roof. 270mm of loft insulation (the recommended depth) can save over £200 per year in an average semi-detached home.
7. Draught-proof your home
Gaps around windows, doors, letterboxes, and keyholes let cold air in and warm air out. Draught-proofing strips cost a few pounds per door or window and can save up to £60 per year.
8. Reduce the thermostat by 1°C
Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut heating costs by around 10%. If you're currently heating to 21°C, try 20°C — you may not notice the difference.
9. Fit a magnetic system filter
A magnetic filter on your boiler return pipe catches sludge and magnetite before it reaches the heat exchanger. This keeps the boiler running efficiently and reduces the risk of costly breakdowns.
10. Consider a new boiler
If your boiler is over 12–15 years old, it may be 60–70% efficient. A modern A-rated condensing boiler runs at 90%+. The energy savings from a new boiler often pay for a significant portion of the installation cost within 5–8 years.
