Modern boilers should operate quietly. Banging, gurgling, whistling, or vibrating sounds all indicate something that needs attention. Here's what each typically means.
Banging or kettling
A loud banging, rumbling, or 'kettling' sound (like a kettle boiling) from the boiler or pipework near the boiler is one of the most common noise complaints.
**Cause:** Lime scale build-up on the heat exchanger creates hot spots where water briefly boils before being quenched by cooler water — exactly like a kettle. Common in hard water areas like Birmingham.
**What to do:** This requires descaling or replacement of the heat exchanger, or in severe cases a new boiler. Annual servicing catches scale build-up before it reaches this stage.
Gurgling
A gurgling or trickling sound from radiators or pipes.
**Cause:** Trapped air in the system, or low water pressure causing turbulent flow.
**What to do:** Bleed your radiators and check the boiler pressure. If gurgling persists after bleeding, call an engineer to check for system leaks.
Whistling (Boiler)
A high-pitched whistle from the boiler.
**Cause:** Restricted gas flow, a partially blocked gas valve, or scale on the heat exchanger causing localised overpressure.
**What to do:** Don't ignore this — call a Gas Safe engineer for diagnosis.
Whistling (Pipework)
Whistling from pipes rather than the boiler.
**Cause:** Water flowing through a slightly closed valve or a valve that has partially failed. Also caused by debris partially blocking a pipe.
**What to do:** Check that all valves are fully open. If the noise persists, a plumber can locate and clear the restriction.
Vibrating or rattling
A vibrating or rattling sound, especially when the heating starts up.
**Cause:** Loose pipework brackets allowing pipes to move as they expand thermally. Also caused by a failing pump bearings.
**What to do:** Loose pipes can be secured with additional brackets — straightforward for a plumber. A failing pump will need replacement.
