Combi vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?

When it comes to replacing your boiler, the most important decision is whether to fit a combi or a system boiler. Both are excellent choices in the right context — the decision depends on your home and hot water demands.

Combi boilers

A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains when a tap is opened. There is no hot water storage cylinder.

Advantages:

Compact — no cylinder or header tank needed

Instant hot water on demand (no waiting for a tank to heat)

Only heats water when needed — no standby heat loss from a cylinder

Lower installation cost (no cylinder to fit)

More space-efficient — ideal for flats, smaller homes, and properties without airing cupboards

Disadvantages:

Flow rate is limited by the boiler's DHW output

Multiple simultaneous outlets (e.g. shower and bath running together) can result in reduced flow or temperature

Not ideal for large families with high simultaneous hot water demand

Mains water pressure needed — low mains pressure areas may struggle

System boilers

A system boiler heats water and stores it in a separate hot water cylinder. Unlike older 'heat-only' (regular) boilers, system boilers include a built-in pump and expansion vessel — no additional header tank in the loft is needed.

Advantages:

Hot water is stored and instantly available at high flow rates regardless of boiler output

Better suited to homes with multiple bathrooms and high simultaneous demand

Compatible with solar thermal panels (the cylinder can have a solar coil)

Good for properties with low mains water pressure

Disadvantages:

Requires space for the hot water cylinder (typically in an airing cupboard)

Water must be pre-heated — if the cylinder runs out, you wait for it to reheat

Slightly higher installation cost than a combi

Cylinder heat loss (though well-insulated modern cylinders lose very little)
