A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains when a tap is opened. There is no hot water storage cylinder.

A system boiler heats water and stores it in a separate hot water cylinder. Unlike older 'heat-only' (regular) boilers, system boilers include a built-in pump and expansion vessel — no additional header tank in the loft is needed.
